Working with the Poem

Question 1. Answer the following questions.

(i) Who is the speaker in the poem?

Answer: The speaker of the poem is poet Frank Flynn when he was a small boy.

(ii) Is she/he afraid or curious, or both?

Answer: He/she is both, afraid as well as curious. He is curious to enter the shed and at the same time. He feels that someone is staring at him.

(iii) What is she/he planning to do soon?

Answer: She/he is planning to go inside the shed soon.

(iv) “But not just yet…” suggests doubt, fear, hesitation, laziness or something else. Choose the word which seems right to you. Tell others why you chose it.

Answer: But not just yet…” suggests the speaker’s hesitation. He is confident that there is no ghost in the shed and that the stories of ghosts that his brother makes up are all lies. There is nobody staring or making strange noises. Also, there is no more a spider on that web on the main door. However, there is some fear inside him as he still cannot muster enough courage to set foot inside the shed even though he listens to the noises coming from the shed every night and has also passed by the shed many times. This shows that his curiosity is mixed with a certain amount of fear and therefore, he hesitates to go inside the shed as yet.

Question 2. Is there a room in your house or a house in your neighbourhood/locality where you would rather not go alone, and never at night? If there is such a place and a story to go with it, let others hear all about it.

Answer: There is a storeroom in my house which is in the backyard of the house. It is a little away from the main structure. It is full of odd objects and not even lit properly. Thus, going to the storeroom, at night, calls for a lot of courage. My mother once asked me to fetch certain things from the storeroom. When I entered the storeroom, I felt as if I saw the movement of shadows. Screamed with terror, but later got to know that those shadows were nothing but my mind’s imagination.
